A kitchen functions only as well as its homeowner does. There is a prevailing mindset in America that bigger is better, but this is not necessarily true. It does not matter how much space or available square footage you may have, but rather what you do with it. The solution is not always to install more kitchen countertops, although we can never get enough of natural granite!

Make the Most of Your Kitchen

The ceiling is your best friend, and if you have yet to utilize this treasured storage spot, it is about time you became acquainted. Hanging pot racks and wall-mounted shelving is lesson No. 1 in square footage conservation, not to mention organization. You will be amazed at how much room you can free up by transferring pots and pans off of your stone countertops. Another amazing benefit of doing this is that you get to actually see the beauty of those granite slabs again!

Magnetic knife strips are super useful and trendy. Instead of tossing them haphazardly into the first open drawer, take advantage of a dedicated knife block or storage strip. Not only do they look better, but they are also far better at keeping little hands at bay!

If you have blank areas on your kitchen walls, especially between cabinetry, then you are missing a golden space-saving opportunity. Shelves can be used to hold all types of glassware and miscellaneous supplies, all the things no one wants sitting on their granite countertops.

Some appliances are just not meant to stay. While it can be difficult to part with that ancient bread-maker that you received as a Christmas gift in 1999, downsizing to the basics (e.g. coffeemaker, toaster, blender, etc.) is crucial when clutter levels reach their breaking point.

Lastly, to avoid damaging your counters, be sure to use over-sized cutting boards when meal prepping. It doubles as additional space and saves your precious stone slabs from unnecessary damage!
