Award-Winning Designer Talks Countertop Colors
February is Designer Month at Premier Surfaces, and we are very fortunate to work with some of the most discerning designers in the industry. When it comes to our countertop inventory, we rely on our top designers to ensure we offer an unmatched selection. From cabinetry to countertop colors, the decisions for a homeowner can be overwhelming. So, whether you are building a new home or starting a kitchen remodel, collaborating with a highly-trained interior designer makes for a less stressful experience.
In this post, we were able to catch up with award-winning designer, Tony Thompson, owner of Tony Thompson Design. Mr. Thompson is President of ASID Alabama and has been published in Southern Living, CityScope (Chattanooga), AboutTown, B-Metro (Birmingham), Soirée (Little Rock). He has received a total of 9 gold awards in various showcase home tours. He has also worked on projects in several major cities across the US including Atlanta, Birmingham, Chattanooga, Chicago, Danbury, Kansas City, Nashville, and NYC.
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN INTERIOR DESIGN?
I began my working career in retail clothing as a buyer and manager. After being recruited to work in a large furniture store, I began assisting interior designers on their projects, which led to my return to school for interior design. I worked for several years as an interior designer specializing in furniture, accessories, and window treatments until I was asked to assist with a home being entered in a Birmingham, Alabama Parade of Homes. I fell in love with the building aspect of design, becoming adept at choosing all interior and exterior design finishes. I particularly enjoy kitchen and bath design, since working with tile and countertop materials is a favorite part of the process for me.
WHAT CAN NEW CLIENTS EXPECT FROM YOU?
A trait for which I am known is my willingness to truly listen to my client. Clients are often surprised as we go through the building process at how I incorporate the details mentioned by them in preliminary meetings that they didn’t realize I made note of. I feel it is my responsibility to give my clients the home they desire but perhaps could not achieve without my help.
The wonderful part for me is that I am able to assist in perfecting architectural drawings and then guide my clients throughout the entire process, from selecting exterior materials all the way through to the last accessory, thereby seeing the dreams of my clients come to fruition. This also applies to my commercial projects. There isn’t a greater feeling for me than standing back and observing the pride on the face of a business owner as he surveys his new, completed work environment, be it a restaurant or office or other business.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE COUNTERTOP COLORS?
I am certainly enamored with quartz countertops and other man-made materials, as they continue to grow in popularity, yet marbles and quartzites are still hugely desirable in high- end projects. I enjoy using marbles such as Calcutta and Carrara that serve as elegant backdrops for a room, providing a soft, subtle look that works well with many styles.
A recent favorite material is a quartzite called Taj Mahal, a soft, creamy beige that has stunning depth and richness. I have used this beautiful product in projects from Chattanooga to Chicago.
